Light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan (14-0, 8 KOs) will fight George Armenta (14-9, 11 KOs) at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City on August 2 in a contest scheduled for 10 rounds.

Monaghan's fight will be the co-feature in the latest edition of Broadway Boxing, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

The Irish Voice caught up with the WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight champion on Monday to see how his preparations have been going.

“I’ve had some great sparring. I have been working with an undefeated cruiserweight from Colombia called Santander Silgado,” said Monaghan, who added that between the heat in the gym and the work he has been doing with trainer Jim Higgins, he is already almost on weight 10 days ahead of the fight.

“I’ve also been sparring an old enemy of mine, Joe Smith Jr., and I was also sparring with Will Rosinsky.”

Monaghan picked up a cut in his last fight, but he confirmed that the lesion has healed without any issues.

Monaghan added that he returned to contact work a little earlier than planned as Rosinsky took a fight with the former undisputed middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik on short notice and asked Monaghan if he would work with him.  The Irish American duly obliged.

Armenta is a 34-year-old veteran who has fought as low as light middleweight over his 12-year professional career. He has only won one of his last six fights and has struggled every time he has faced decent opposition.

The Maryland native was last in action on June 1 when he lost a unanimous decision to Dennis Hasson in Atlantic City.

Monaghan believes his natural advantages will be too much for Armenta.

“I am going to be the bigger and stronger guy,” he said, adding that he was confident that he would move to 15-0 after this fight.

“With my style of fighting, my trainer (Higgins) and manager (PJ Kavanagh) feel that I do better in the longer fights.”

Monaghan, an extremely popular fighter with a huge cadre of fans, admits that after a short amateur career he is still learning in every fight he takes as a professional.

That said, if he emerges with a good win on August 2, he feels like he might not be too far away from a possible TV fight.  However, to do that, he will more than likely have to sign with a promoter, and that is something that he and his team have been mulling over recently.

“Well, the thing is that we have every big promoter looking to sign me.  We have been holding out, but they have been dangling the TV date out in front of me,” he said.

Monaghan knows that his ticket-selling power is a huge asset for any promotional company, and team Monaghan has a very good relationship with DiBella Entertainment. Right now he and his team are “leaning towards DiBella” as the promoter who might be able to take his career to the next level.

However, these aspirations will disintegrate fast if he loses, and Monaghan is taking this assignment very seriously. Tickets for the fight are available by calling 212-947-2577 or by visiting Ticketmaster.com.

In other news, according to boxrec.com, super featherweight Patrick Hyland (26-0, 12 KOs) and middleweight Matthew Macklin (28-4, 19 KOs) have opponents for their respective fights.

Hyland will fight Carlos Fulgencio (19-7, 12 KOs) at the Sahlen Stadium in Rochester in a contest scheduled for eight rounds when he returns to the ring on August 8, while Macklin will fight former light middleweight belt-holder Joachim Alcine (33-2-1, 19 KOs) on September 15 on the undercard of the Sergio Martinez/Julio Chavez Jr. fight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
