Rory McIlroy has revealed how Ireland’s golden girl Katie Taylor inspired him to Major glory at Kiawah Island on Sunday.

The new USPGA champion has described the Olympic boxing hero as a role model.

But he has yet to make up his mind on which team he will play for at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil – Ireland or Britain.

The young Ulsterman has confirmed that he watched Taylor’s Olympic heroics from America as he chased down the USPGA crown.

He said: “Katie did wonderfully well. She’s a great fighter, a real hero and a really nice person into the bargain.

“I think there is a huge feelgood factor in Great Britain and in Ireland from the Olympics.

“Obviously I wasn’t competing, but it is nice to put my name up alongside them. Clearly it has been a phenomenal two weeks in London.

“I was happy to be able to personally cap it off with a win.”

Having travelled to London with his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki for her Olympic preparation, McIlroy experienced the Games at first hand.

But he has yet to make his mind up as to where his allegiances will belong when golf is introduced to the Olympic roster in Brazil.

His manager Conor Ridge explained: “Rory hasn’t even thought about the 2016 Olympics.

“It’s four years away and God knows where he’s going to be in his career at that time.

“He’s 23 now and will be 27 when Rio comes round, so it’s not even something to discuss at this stage.”
