Ronan O’Gara has all but committed his immediate future to the Ireland rugby team in the wake of his World Cup disappointment.

O’Gara and his fellow World Cup quarter-finalists have arrived home from New Zealand after Saturday’s defeat to Wales.

After hinting at an international retirement during the tournament, O’Gara is now ready to push for more Six Nations glory in the spring.

After his arrival back in Cork, O’Gara said: “Irish rugby’s been so good to me, you don’t walk away from that.

“The other side of it is that I’m 34 and new talent is coming through, so we’ll see what happens but you don’t ever turn your back on a great country.”

The Munster star also outlined the regret that the Ireland players brought back with them after Saturday’s crushing defeat in Wellington.

O’Gara added: “It’s disappointing but that’s the way it goes at this level.

“France have lost twice, Wales have lost once and Australia have lost once yet they’re still in the competition. We’ve lost once and we’re home.

“We had a great bunch of lads, great camaraderie and a lot of highlights to take away from the competition.”
