Police officer Adam Nolan is on the boxing beat in London and through to the last 16 in the 69kg class at the Olympics.

Wexford man Nolan, who trains with gold medal hopeful Katie Taylor in Bray, laid the foundations for his win over Carlos Estacio Sanchez in the first two rounds to make it three wins from three for Irish boxers.

Nolan said: “It’s great. I’m through to the last 16 which was my aim. I’ll enjoy the win but I know there are things I can improve on.

“I made life hard for myself. I didn’t use my jab enough but I got the result I wanted which is the most important thing.

“It’s just a matter of looking back at the tape and seeing what I can do better in the next fight.”

Chloe Magee was the other big winner on the night as she beat Egypt’s Hadia Hosney in her badminton opener.

Canoeist Eoin Rheinisch, fourth in Beijing, made it safely through to the semi-finals in the Canoe Slalom Kayak K1 class.

It was a disappointing day in the pool as Melanie Nocher, Sycerika McMahon and Grainne Murphy all failed to get out of their heats.

Showjumper Denis Lynch meanwhile has failed with his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to be re-instated to the Irish team.
