Ladies Football
Na Fianna pushed all the way
Na Fianna 2-16 Fermanagh 2-13

Na Fianna was made to work all the way before they secured the points in this trilling Ladies Championship encounter. Strong finishes at the ends of both half’s helped them to finally complete the win over a determined Fermanagh side who has thrown a spanner in the works for the Championship. They have shown that they will have a major say in the outcome. Na Fianna jumped into a 1-03 to zero lead after six minutes with Joanne McKenna getting the goal before Fermanagh came into the game.

A pair of goals from Loretta Cunningham and Ashley Gormley that sandwiched a point from Gormley had them into the lead with 15 minutes gone. A ;point from Molly O’Rourke did stem the tide but a further scoring burst of points from Cunningham and Erin Galligan who was very active in the middle of the field extended their advantage to two. 2-03 to 1-04. When Aine Dwyer and Mary O’Rourke linked with Molly O’Rourke Na Fianna had their second goal. They then cancelled out two points from Cunningham by finishing the half strong with a three points of their own.

Fermanagh started the second half in tornado form as they went back in front with three points from Maeve Burke, Cunningham and Caroline Murphy. As the game ebbed and flowed, Na Fianna again reacted to the Fermanagh attacks by getting back on the scoreboard. They had six of the next eight points as they went into a 2-14 to 2-10 lead.

Aine Dwyer slotted over four of the points from frees and they also had to withstand the loss of Joanne McKenna to injury when she ran into her own player. They withstood points from Maeve Burke and Erin Galligan by cancelling them with scores from Mary O’Rourke and Brianna Tierney after a long solo run. Erin Galligan did have the final chance but her shot went over when they needed a net shaker.

Ladies Football
All Easy for KD.
Kerry/Donegal 2-24 Rockland 0-02

Kerry/Donegal had it all their own way as they easily accounted for the challenge of Rockland in this Ladies encounter. Six points in the first six minutes with six different scorers set the stage and a plethora of scores throughout the first half made it 1-18 to 0-00 at the break.

Denise Dunnion was clinical while wing back Naimh Britton joined the attack to score three points. A couple of brilliant saves by Karla Coughlin in the Rockland goal kept the attackers at bay and even on their goal from a penalty Coughlin was unlucky as she got her hand to the ball but could not stop it going over the line.

Catherina Brady was very active on the forty and she was showing constantly as she raided forward at her ease. The game continued in the same vain in the second half as Kerry/Donegal added to their total with a further 1-06. Rockland did annex two points from Kelly Weir as they finally got on the scoreboard.

Kerry/Donegal were able to score at will however as they took home the win.

Senior Football
Mournemen show strengths.
Down 2-10 Leitrim 0-08

Down used a brace of goals in the second half to punctuate their dominance in this senior football contest. After Robbie Moran equalized a Kenny O’Connor point in the fifth minute, they did not trail again. At the break they had a 0-05 to 0-03 lead with Alan O’Hara excellently driving over two fifty’s as well as helping Moran to dominate the middle of the field.

They were also using Mark Dobbin as an extra defender and it was a very successful tactic, and one that Leitrim never Came to terms with. Four of the first five points of the second half extended there lead before Sean Kelly converted a penalty to the net after Sean Fee was fouled on 15 minutes.

While Leitrim had a Donal Hartnett point in reply, a six player move that began with Sean Fee on the Down forty, went down the left wing through Alan O’Hara, Michael Sloan and finally Brian Annett ended in the hands of Big Pakie Downey. He made little mistake and slotted low to the net for their seconfd goal and a 2-09 to 0-06 lead.

John O’Neill and Donal Hartnett sandwiched a Downey score on the run in but the sending off of Paul O’Hara when he was fouled but then hit out at Brian Murray completed any remote chance that Leitrim had for a recovery. Mike Creegan did hit the top of the crossbar in the closing moments but it would have been a fortunate goal to say the least had it gone in.
