Notre Dame’s comeback upset win over Marquette from Thursday’s Big East quarterfinal may be outshined by what seems to be McDonald’s sponsored jerseys. The Notre Dame basketball team surprised fans with their new alternate jerseys' resemblance to McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. The lime green uniforms were questioned by most and even sparked discussions of the worst jerseys of all time.
“We just elected a new pope, the new pop sees that, now hes saying I don’t wanna’ be the pope,” ESPN’s Herm Edwards joked about the Catholic school’s new look.
Regardless of how they looked, Notre Dame performed against Marquette. Pat Connaughton was particularly unphased by the uniforms as he came in and hit 6 of 10 from behind the three point arc, finishing with 18 points. Jerian Grant continued to be a rock for the Irish scoring 17 points while grabbing 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and passing for 6 assists.
Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey was very happy with his teams performance and said, "What a great college game. I'm really proud of our group. I thought we were men the whole night. The game didn't start really well for us, but we fought back. Two good teams going at it. They made another run, and we fought out of it. We made such big plays at key times, and everybody had a hand in it. We're thrilled to be playing in our fourth straight semifinal. I know no one else in the league has done that. We wonder what it would be like to play on Saturday because our program has never played there."
The Irish will advance to the semi finals for a rematch against Louisville, who beat Notre Dame twice this year. Notre Dame will hope to get their first win against the Cardinals tonight at Madison Square Garden in what may be the Irish’s last hurrah in Big East basketball. This will be Notre Dame’s last chance to capture the Big East Championship title as they will be moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference on July 1st.
