Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd pleads not guilty to DUI charge

Notre Dame star wide receiver Michael Floyd, who is suspended from playing football, hopes to make a plea deal on his drunk driving charge before his next court appearance in June, his attorney said.

The 21 year old junior, did not appear in person to his hearing but his defense attorney, William Stanley, said he expects Floyd to plead guilty by that date to avoid a trial.

Authorities say Floyd was arrested at 3:18 a.m. March 20 after running a stop sign a block from the Notre Dame campus main entrance. Prosecutors say a breathalyzer test showed Floyd had a blood-alcohol level of more than double Indiana's legal limit for driving.

If found guilty of the Class A misdemeanor, Floyd faces a maximum sentence of a year in the St. Joseph County Jail and a $5,000 fine.

Coach Brian Kelly suspended Floyd after his arrest and said it would not be lifted until Floyd changes his behavior and both the legal and university discipline procedures ran their course.

Notre Dame's student disciplinary arm, the Office of Residence Life, is however allowing him to stay in school.
