Notre Dame starting quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese were arrested early Thursday morning. The two were booked into the St. Joseph County jail in Indiana just after 1am on Thursday.

The South Bend Tribune reports on the run-in with the law the two Fighting Irish football stars encountered late Wednesday into early Thursday morning. South Bend Police were dispatched to a home where the two football players were and were subsequently arrested.

Sgt. Bill Redman of St. Joseph County Police said that Rees, who will only be turning 20 years old this month, was arrested for public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, minor consumption and battery to law enforcement, which is a felony charge.

Sgt. Redman added that Rees was pepper-sprayed before being taken into police custody.

Other football player Carlo Calabrese, 21, was arrested for disorderly conduct. He was later bailed out for $150 just before 4 o’clock Thursday morning.

Following the incident, University of Notre Dame issued the following statement: "The University is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system. Internal discipline is handled privately, in accord with our own policies and federal law."

Both Calabrese and Rees are due back in court on May 17th.

Rees is just finishing his sophomore year and started 12 games this past fall, upping his starting games from four the previous season. Calabrese will be a senior in the fall but retains two seasons of eligibility. He played in all 13 games last season at inside linebacker.
