New York Ladies denied All-Ireland final win at the death by Wicklow

The New York ladies team were denied an historic All-Ireland final win at Croke Park on Sunday – and may not make it back to Dublin for the replay due to the huge costs involved.

The girls from the Big Apple were just seconds away from winning the All-Ireland Junior Football crown when Wicklow substitute Laura Hogan grabbed a last gasp equalizer.

New York were 0-9 to 0-8 ahead in a nervy final at Croke Park when Hogan was sprung from the bench to spoil their party with two late points.

The second Hogan score came with just two minutes left on the clock as New York looked set for a sensational win.

Just to add to the drama, the Wicklow centre-forward Caoilfhionn Deeney then missed a free-kick to win the game with just 15 seconds remaining.

Centre-forward Emma Clarke was the hero for the New York side with eight points as they came from behind twice in the second-half before edging ahead in the final minutes.

Clarke had earlier missed four first-half frees as the sides went in at 0-5 apiece at half-time.

The GAA have fixed the replay for Saturday week, 8th October, but that now depends on whether or not the New York county board can fund a return trip to Dublin for their team.

NEW YORK: A Leyden; L Lilly, TA McCullagh, I Mullarkey; JK Garcia, C Brady, J Monaghan; L McKeon, A O’Dwyer; Mary O’Rourke (0-1), K Roche, C Traynor; E Clarke (0-8, six frees), C McBrien, M De Búrca.

Subs: Mary T O’Rourke for Roche (33 mins), K Lynch for McBrien (52 mins), M Brennan for McKeon (55 mins).
