Goals the difference for Rockland

Rockland 3-05 Long Island Gaels 0-12

It is the old saying, goals win games. It was never as true as Rockland used a trifecta to get the win despite starting the game in a 0-05 to 0-00 hole. Darren Moore had scored all the points for LIG but then Rockland started their comeback. Two Sean McGrath frees got them going and they were helped when Chris McKenna stopped a Moore shot with a full length save. After two Gaels points and with time winding down, Ciaran Hennessy had a point and was then involved in a move that released Martin Mullin who fired to the net with seconds left in the half. Both sides had points to open the second half before Rockland had their second goal, a Brendan Relliahan long range shot found its way to the net. Long Island responded with three points from McDaid and Moore (two) but super sub Pat Guerin joined the fray and stole the show. He got his side within one with a point from play, 0-12 to 2-05 and followed it with a brilliant finish after Sean McGrath set him up.

Rangers advance easily

Rangers 1-16 Kerry 1-04

Rangers were always in control against Kerry in this intermediate contest and the result was never in doubt from the early going. They used an excellent performance by Sean O’Neill with strong back up from Shane Hogan and Ronan Caffrey. O’Neill opened the scoring and his side added the next six scores with five different players getting in on the act. The play of Derek Courtney and Shane Hogan in the half back line was terrific with both getting on the scoreboard while also doing their defensive duties to perfection. Kerry opened their account with eight minutes left when Alan Curran scored, the same player added a free shortly after but that was the extent of their scoring in the opening half. Sean O’Neill cancelled both out from play and Rangers had a 0-09 to 0-02 lead.

hile Kerry had a Curran goal in the third minute of the second half, Rangers responded with a Kevin Daly major after Ger O’Sullivan stopped his first effort. They followed with six of the next sight minors and it was easy street to victory.

O’Driscoll leads way

Kerry 2-15 Cavan 1-11

Kerry used a clinical second half performance to pave the way for a comfortable victory and a slot versus Cork in the final of the KO on the holiday weekend. They jumped out the gate quickly and had a 0-04 to 0-01 advantage after 12 minutes. Gary O’Driscoll opened the scoring and it was to be a constant throughout the day as he helped himself to 1-06 over the hour. With seven minutes left in the first half Kerry had a 0-07 to 0-04 lead but Cavan finished strong with points from Sloan, Kelly and Cosgrove to draw level before Darren Moore again had Kerry in front at the break.

Cavan went into the lead for the final time when they added Cosgrove and Holahan points to open the second half. Kerry however reacted with 1-07 in the next ¼ hour as Keelan Hickey started the bombardment with an excellent goal after a very good run from the right wing. Darren Moore also caused numerous problems with his ball carrying and chipped in with two points. Cavan’s only response were Conor Cosgrove frees, a brace but Gary Driscoll cancelled them out with a drive to the top left corner of the net after Robbie Moran found him. Sean Kelly did have a penalty goal for Cavan before the end but it was too little too late.

Senior football semi final

Lenehan the Cork Star

Cork 1-10 Donegal 0-07

Cork qualified to meet Kerry in the KO final after a hard fought win over Donegal. They can thank their defense who held their opponents to 0-02 in the first half and were constantly creating chances out of the back. Granted all were not always converted into scores at the other end as wayward shooting and timely tackles made the day far more difficult than it should have been. Mikey Lenehan was the star and he paved the way with four points in the opening thirty minutes.

lways in front he was slippery as an eel when in position. But for a very good save by Brian Cuilinan on a Lenehan shot, the lead would have been far wider. Donegal had a mini resurrection to open the second half with four of the first five points. Conor Lynam showed his quality with all four scores and was deadly when given opportunity. It just didn’t come enough. In the aftermath of an incident with ten minutes left when Jason Kelly and PJ Flanagan both received straight reds, Cork got the goal that clinched the contest. Cathel Hatzer finished after Mickey Lenehan again did all the spade work.

Cork 1 Darren O’Mahoney 2 Gary Hanley 4 Liam Jennings 5 Shawn McNamee 6 Rory Stafford (0-01)7 Derek Courtney 8 Alan Raftery 9 Danny Lehane 10 Mickey Lenehan (0-06) 11 Jason Kelly (0-01)12 Tom Hardwick 13 Ger McCarthy (0-02)15 Dan Doona Sub Cathel Hatzer (1-00)
