A plane load of 14-year-old New York boys and girls traveled to Ireland last week for the Feile Peil na nOg in the hopes of getting their hands on at least one cup, but instead they are bringing home two, along with plenty of gold medals for all the girls and boys involved.

Nearly 4,000 teenagers made up the 76 teams that took part in the 268 matches, which were held over the weekend in County Laois and County Offaly.

Both New York boys and girls teams came out on top of their Division groups, winning the two finals on Sunday in Portlaoise.

GAA president Liam O’Neill foresees a great future in Gaelic football for young girls.

He says New York are “streets ahead” of Ireland when it comes to organizing juveniles, particularly girls, in the sport, he told the Irish Independent.

“We can learn a lot from New York. They have 700 children- and 400 of them are girls- playing Gaelic football,” he said.

New York manager, Eoin Mc Sweeney said the young boys and girls show their commitment by making training sessions and games across New York.
