The Mexican Football Federation has announced the departure of boss Sven-Goran Eriksson nine months into his reign.

The former England and Manchester City manager struggled to make a positive impression after his appointment in June last year and he had been under pressure for some time.

Having lost their opening game in the fourth round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers 2-0 in the USA, Mexico beat Costa Rica 2-0 last month before falling to a 3-1 defeat in Honduras on Wednesday, and the Mexican Football Federation has now taken action.

Prior to the announcement, FMF director Nestor de la Torre said: “We will carry out a deep analysis of the results we have obtained and the way we have played.

“[Eriksson] is waiting for the decision we will take at a meeting that we will have with the members of the National Teams committee.”

FMF president Justino Compean added: “The measures which we will take will be for the good of the Mexican team and we will take any decision we have to, no matter how difficult or hard it may be.

“It’s difficult for us to not pick up points away from home.”

Eriksson was strongly linked with Portsmouth following the departure of Tony Adams.
