US Open champion Rory McIlroy’s reign as the world’s top golfer is over – for now.

The 22-year-old was overtaken by England’s Luke Donald on Sunday night.

Donald’s play-off triumph at the Transition Championship in Tampa saw him return to the number one ranking.

The Englishman needed a win in Florida to reclaim top spot from Ryder Cup team-mate McIlroy and did just that in a four-man play-off.

McIlroy, currently preparing for the Masters, was quick to congratulate Donald via his Twitter account.

Writing from his new West Palm Beach base in Florida, McIlroy tweeted: “Well I enjoyed it while it lasted! Congrats @LukeDonald! Impressive performance!.”

Fellow Irishman Padraig Harrington hit a course record 61 on Thursday but had to settle for a share of 20th place after finishing the tournament on seven under.
