Birmingham City midfielder Keith Fahey is out of the European Championships after a cruel injury blow.

The Dubliner was ruled out on Saturday night after he was sent for a scan on a groin problem.

Fahey was unable to play any part in the Aviva Stadium win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ireland’s final home game before the Euros.

He felt the injury again in the warm-up and was sent for the scan immediately after the 1-0 victory.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni and the player discussed the injury on Saturday evening when it was decided he would not be fit enough to travel with the squad to their Italian training camp on Sunday.

Paul Green, released by Derby County at the end of the Championship season, has been called up as Fahey’s replacement.

A spokesman for the Football Association of Ireland said: “During the warm-ups at Saturday’s match, Keith Fahey felt something not quite right. He was scanned following the match.

“The FAI medical team have received the results of the scan which showed unfortunately that his groin strain was persisting.

“The results were discussed with the player and he agreed that he would not recover fully in time for Euro 2012.

“As a result, he is departing from the squad and Paul Green is being called in.

“Giovanni Trapattoni spoke to the player, who is very disappointed to miss out on Euro 2012, and told him that he remains part of his plans for the future.”
