Rory McIlroy felt the weight of a poor season start lift off his shoulders as his increasing comfort became clear during the final round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. McIlroy  managed to finished in the top ten on Sunday, catapulting 22 spots, shooting an eagle and no bogeys.

"A day like today felt like a long way away, if I'm honest.  That’s been one of my problems: I always think when I’m playing bad that it’s further away than it is,” McIlroy said looking back on his recent struggles, reports FOX Sports.

His toothache fueled third round walk-off last Friday at the Honda Classic landed McIlroy in the dog house and had media buzzing.  McIlroy’s first two tournaments included missing a cut and a first round lost in match play.  Sunday’s performance seemed to halt the growing number of question marks surrounding McIlroy and remove the monkey making home on his back.

McIlroy spoke about his performance’s impact and said, “I think most of you guys know, I probably wear my heart on my sleeve a bit with my golf. If I have a bad round, it's sort of like the end of the world, but if I play a good one, I'm happy again. That's just the way it goes. I was pretty down about my game coming into this week, but a few days like I've played, it does my confidence a world of good.”

The Northern Irish golfer choose a good time to find some confidence as he and the rest of the field prepare for the years first major, the Masters. Hopefully Rory can bounce back like Tiger Woods, who won this weekend WGC-Cadillac Championship by two strokes.

McIlroy’s talent and potential are still as present as ever but his consistency and mental toughness will mature with more experience.
