In a move that will surely divide Irish soccer fans, the Football Association of Ireland have issued a statement backing Giovanni Trapattoni to continue on as Republic of Ireland manager.

The Italian has come under intense scrutiny following a dismal showing at the European Championships and a humiliating 6-1 defeat at home to Germany but the FAI hierarchy feel that he can still lead the Irish to Brazil in 2014.

Speaking to rte.ie, a spokesperson from the FAI said, ‘While disappointed like everyone with the poor result and performance against Germany and understanding the frustration of some of our supporters, [we] believe the current position in the group means that qualification for Brazil in 2014 remains a realistic and achievable prospect. We reaffirm that Giovanni Trappatoni is to remain in charge of the National team.’

Giovanni Trappattoni has been very public in stating that he wants to remain in charge and must be relieved that the FAI have voiced belief in his ability to get Ireland to the World Cup.

The spokesperson continued, ‘The Board recognises the depth of feeling surrounding the team, the performances, the results and the manager, reflecting the passion which everyone in Irish football has for the game and will continue to work closely with the manager.'
