Limerick tennis player Conor Niland

Irishman Conor Niland has qualified for the US Open. A victorious three set encounter against Dutch opponent Matwe Middlekoop sees the 199th ranked player through to the main tournament at Flushing Meadows.

The Limerick man recorded a tough 2-6 6-1 6-4 against the Dutchman in just under to hours in the third and final round of qualifying.

Speaking by phone after his qualification, Niland expressed his relief, "It wasn't over till the last ball was struck. I'm delighted to be through."

This will be his second consecutive grand slam tournament, after he reached, but lost out narrowly in the first round at Wimbledon in June.

Ireland will have two men playing at Flushing Meadows if fellow Irishman, Louk Sorenson successfully qualifies. The Irish number two is just one win away from joining Niland in the main draw after recording a 6-4 6-1 victory against Portugal's Gastao Elias.
