Graeme McDowell has vowed to bounce back after a final round collapse cost him dearly in the Players Championship at Sawgrass on Sunday.

McDowell led going into the final round but eventually finished in a tie for 33rd after a disastrous 79 as KJ Choi triumphed.

“To be honest I felt I ran out of steam a little bit,” said McDowell. “After bogeys on six and seven I felt the energy sucked out of me. I went flat and everything I tried to do went a little wrong.

“I went chasing and this course will do that to you. I didn’t have the energy levels to pick myself up. This will hurt for a few hours, but I’ve taken some big steps this week and I will move on quickly.”

In other golf news, Darren Clarke ended a 994 day run without a win when he took top prize in the Iberdrola Open in Majorca on Sunday, his 13th European Tour title.

A final-round 69 and a six-under-par total saw him finish three clear of England’s Chris Wood with Shane Lowry in joint fifth and Damien McGrane in ninth.

Clarke said, “It’s a bit of a monkey to get off my back after three years of not winning so it’s good. On a personal note I’m delighted to have played quite nicely and win the tournament.”
