Golf’s “fifth major” begins

Padraig Harrington and Rory Mcllroy are in action today at the 2009 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass stadium course in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida.

The prestigious tournament is known as golf's "fifth major."

Triple major winner Harrington comes in to the tournament in mixed form. The 37-year-old was there or thereabouts at the Masters but has struggled a little since, missing the cut at last week's Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Mcllroy is just after a two week break after a busy start to the year. The rising star turned 20 on Monday and will look to build on his recent forays to the States.

Also in action is Graeme McDowell, who finished as the top Irishman at Augusta last month.

Both men will head straight back to Ireland for next week’s 3 Irish Open at the Baltry in County Louth.

Mcllroy teed off just after 9.15 a.m. and Harrington is due to tee off at 1.10 p.m.
