Europe’s largest bookmakers Paddy Power has suspended betting on when Giovanni Trapattoni’s tenure as manager of the Irish Republic’s soccer squad would end.

Paddy Powers reports that the odds on the Italian no longer being boss of the team on New Year’s Day went from 2/1 on Monday morning to 11/10.

A spokesperson from the bookmakers said, “The amount of money placed over such a short period would lead us to believe that something is afoot and it’s safe to say that we’re running scared on this one.”

Also on Monday the Irish Independent reported that a source from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed that the Italian manager no longer “has the full and total support of the FAI.” The manager’s future with the team has been in question since Ireland’s humiliating 6-1 defeat against Germany on Friday.

It seems that the only thing that could save Trapattoni’s job is a win against the Faroe Islands on Tuesday night. However, this looks like a doubtful possibility.

The FAI source said it was likely that an extraordinary meeting of the FAI board will be organized before the end of this week.

The source said Trapattoni “would not be sacked between matches.”

They said, “That would not happen in any international set-up.

"Whatever happens won't happen until after tomorrow night.

"The board hasn't met since Friday night's game, but I know that none of the members have spoken to Trapattoni, either."

They added, "If he is to go that could all happen within days of the team returning home from the Faroes."
