Rory McIlroy faces a fine after he blew his top and bent a club in frustration as his US Open hopes suffered a horrible death on Sunday.

McIlroy was completely out of contention in a tournament won by England’s Justin Rose when he leant on a club so hard that he bent it out of shape.

Television pictures highlighted the frustration on McIlroy’s face as he leant on the club and twisted the shaft after a poor shot into the water on the 11th hole.

He was unable to use the club for the rest of the round as he carded a quadruple-bogey eight on the hole and a closing 76 to finish 14 over par.

McIlroy said afterwards: “I just hit a bad tee shot into the creek there and what you don’t want to do as a golfer is follow one mistake with another, and that’s what I did. And obviously I got a bit frustrated there.

“It’s a hole that you want to try to take advantage of. It’s a hole that you want to at least give yourself a birdie chance and you walk off with a quad and it’s not very good.

“I think that’s what this tournament does to you. At one point or another it’s got the better of you, and it definitely did this weekend.”

Padraig Harrington was best of the Irish, tied 21st on 11 over par with Waterford amateur Kevin Phelan tied 62nd after a final round 74 and a 20 over total.

America’s Phil Mickelson suffered US Open heartache again as a closing 74 saw him finish two shots behind Rose in a share of second with Australian Jason Day (71).

Jason Dufner, Open champion Ernie Els, Billy Horschel and Hunter Mahan were all two shots further back.
