Four Irish golfers set to tee off at USPGA Thursday

The final major of the year will feature four Irish players in the field for the 91st PGA championship at Hazeltine in Chaska, Minnesota.

Tiger Woods, who celebrated his 70th win as a pro last weekend when he won his seventh WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, will start the tournament as overwhelming favorite.

Leading the Irish charge will be Paradig Harrington, who will play with Woods and Rich Beem for Thursday and Friday play. Despite losing to Woods in a stirring final day’s play at Firestone, the 37-year-old has hit form at the perfect time as he starts his defense of the title he won last year at Oakland Hills. The trio tee os at 8.35 a.m.

Irish golfing sensation Rory Mcilroy will also fancy his chances this week as he hopes to continue his good run of major performances in his first full year as a professional.

Graeme McDowell will also be in action this weekend and is a player that has been three or thereabouts in major play this year.  The Portrush man was particularly disappointed with his final round at the U.S. Open, as he felt that it was a tournament that he had an opportunity of winning. One to keep an eye on. McDowell tees off with Robert Allenby and Dustin Johnson at 8.05 a.m.

Finally, Darren Clarke will also tee off this Thursday and though he has been struggling of late, the big man will hope that this long course will suit his game.  The Dungannon man will see if he can get back to the form that once saw him content regularly at Majors. Clarke tees off Thursday at 12.45.p.m. with Ryan Benzel and Charles Howell III.
