Katie Taylor, who came third in her lightweight division for a world title in Barbados last month, has been voted the AIBA’s World Female Boxer of the Year for the second time.

Taylor, a Co. Kildare woman, will fly to Kazakhstan on November 2 to pick up her award.

In 2008 Taylor scooped the same prestigious award (there was no awards in 2009).

In Barbados Taylor beat China’s Cheng Dong to retain her title.

It was her 100th victory from 106 bouts since 2001.

Taylor’s coach and father, Peter Taylor said he was very proud of his daughter and thrilled that she was chosen again this year for the prestigious title.

"Katie couldn't believe it when she heard the news," he said.

"It's a fantastic honour."

In other boxing news five of Northern Ireland’s boxers have claimed gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this week.

Paddy Barnes, Tommy McCarthy, Patrick Gallagher, Eamon O'Kane and Steven Ward all won their fights to clinch places in the finals.

Barnes was a bronze medal winner for Ireland in the 2008 Olympics.
