Jim Stynes will be remembered at Croke Park on Saturday night when Dublin take on Donegal and Tipperary in the GAA’s National Football and Hurling Leagues.

Dublin fans will get their chance to say farewell to the GAA and Aussie Rules legend at a special ceremony between the two games.

GAA Director General Paraic Duffy has paid his own tribute to Stynes, an All-Ireland minor medal winner with Dublin before he departed for Australia.

Duffy said: “You don’t appreciate the regard in which he is held until you’ve been in Australia.

“When you hear the Prime Minister of Australia talking about him and getting a state funeral in Victoria you can see what he means to people.”

The GAA will be represented at the funeral according to Duffy who added: “The last time I met him was in October for the International Series.

“The word legend is over-used but he was a legend of Australian sport.

“It’s very sad for Jim’s family, I know his brother Brian well. It’s a huge blow to his family but also for the GAA as we regard him as one of our own.”
