Manchester City’s hopes of UEFA Cup success suffered a dent in Germany as they succumbed 3-1 to Hamburg.

Martin Jol’s men fell behind to an early strike from Stephen Ireland, but goals from Joris Mathijsen, Piotr Trochowski and Paolo Guerrero gave Hamburg a two goal lead to take to England in the second-leg of this quarter-final next week.

Manchester City face an uphill task despite their away goal. They were unable to produce a chance of any real note in the second half despite the talents at their disposal.

More ominous is the fact that their opponents have won every away match that they’ve played in the Uefa Cup this season, a record mark Hughes’ men will have to shatter if they are to progress to the last four.
