Irish athlete Cathriona Cuddihy’s fate at the forthcoming games is set to be decided by a appeals tribunal following an appeal by Joanna Mills to compete on the team instead. The latter athletes appeal was successful and the Olympic Council of Ireland has now appointed an Appeals Tribunal to adjudicate on the Women's 4x400 Relay team and decide on its team members.

The appeal will be held on Thursday July 19th and the final decision will be forthcoming no later than Monday July 23rd. For now the names of both athletes have been registered for London with one entry to be scrapped following the decision.

Meanwhile in boxing, team Ireland captain Darren O’Neill has said that the memory of former middleweight rival Darren Sutherland will inspire his team to triumph at the games. Sutherland was tragically found dead in London last year just one year after winning bronze in Beijing and O’Neill insists that his legacy and memory will push the team forward.

O'Neill has risen from the ranks in recent years, and the former Kilkenny hurling star is hoping to emulate Sutherland in this years Olympics as a tribute to the deceased star.
