Caroline Wozniacki has sent a romantic birthday greeting to boyfriend Rory McIlroy on Twitter – as he makes a move for a first win of the season at Quail Hollow.

The two time Major winner turns 24 on Saturday with tennis star Wozniacki keen to share her love for Rory with the world.

She tweeted: “Happy birthday to the most amazing person I know! @McIlroyRory today u are the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be!”

McIlroy has his own birthday treat planned as he moves into contention at the Wells Fargo championship on a course where he has tasted success before.

Now six months without a tour win, McIlroy is right in contention after a second round 71 left him on six under for the tournament, just three behind leader Phil Mickelson going into the weekend.

McIlroy told the Irish Times: “I’m back to what I’m supposed to do, which is playing golf and trying to win golf tournaments.”

He explained that he had spent time in Florida with coach Michael Bannon last week working on his swing. This has led to an upturn in fortunes in North Carolina.

Rory added: “It was only a little thing but it’s made a good difference. I think it’s big strides because my game wasn’t where it should have been at all at the start of the year.

“I got into a couple of bad habits on my swing, and it just took me a little bit of time to get out of them . . . this is the sort of golf I expect to play.

“I felt like at the first few events of the year I had a big miss to the right and I think I’ve eliminated that, which is a good thing.”
