Brandon Meriweather's time as a Patriot could be over after alleged shooting

According to a report on deadspin.com New England Patriots' safety Brandon Meriweather has been accused of shooting two men during a brawl.

Meriweather allegedly shot one of the men in the head in statements attributed to the victims' lawyer; John Morgan.

Morgan's account of the incident reports that the trouble started when a friend of Meriweather allegedly beat up a woman. The woman's brother and a friend arrived later to confront the protagonist of the fight. Meriweather allegedly took out a gun when his friend was losing the fight and shot the brother of the women, grazing his face with the bullet before it hit his friend in the head.

"He's extremely lucky to be alive," Morgan said.

Meriweather has previously been involved in a similar situation while attending the University of Miami in 2006:

"SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Miami Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard Friday morning by an unknown person who fled after another player returned gunfire.

Police said Cooper was able to walk after being shot and the injury wasn't believed to be serious, but he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After Cooper was shot, teammate and roommate Brandon Meriweather pulled a pistol from his pants pocket and fired three times at the person, who jumped a fence and fled with another person in a car, police said. It was unclear if the assailant was hit.

Police said Meriweather used his gun legally."

Both victims of the most recent incident attended Apopka High School with Meriweather, who later played football at the University of Miami.

The original report can be found here.

These are of course just allegations but should the story prove to be true, you can count Meriweather out of the Patriots plans for the future. Irrelevant of whether the player is suspended or not, do not expect Belichick to keep around a player with such off the field problems.

Meriweather is a talented young player with potential to make game changing plays. He would be missed at the back of the Patriots' defense but is not irreplaceable.

The Patriots are lucky enough to have good depth at safety with players like James Sanders and Pat Chung available but may now look for a safety with one of their 6 picks in the first three rounds of the upcoming NFL draft.
