The news that Boston College will play Notre Dame in 2015 has dramatically increased the chances that the game could go to Ireland.
The teams will not play between now and 2015 and it will be a home game for Notre Dame.
IrishCentral understands that major efforts to get another Notre Dame game to Ireland are underway after the massive success of the 2012 game against Navy.
A clash with their Catholic school archrivals would be an enormous draw in Dublin where both teams have played in the past.
Boston College played in the original Emerald Isle Classic game back in 1988 when they defeated Army at the old Lansdowne Road stadium.
The Emerald Isle Classic was discontinued after poor attendances in 1989. Notre Dame then played Navy in Dublin at a half empty Croke Park in 1996 but the game last year against Navy was a smashing success.
Notre Dame sources say that there are moves underfoot to have the Fighting Irish back in Dublin sooner rather than later and that there is heavy financial muscle behind the move.
A Notre Dame /Boston College game would likely be played in Croke Park which has an 80,000 plus capacity compared to the much smaller 50,000 seat venue for last year’s game at the Aviva Stadium.
Given the just announced schedule, the 2015 game between the two rivals would appear to be the best opportunity for an Irish game sources say.
