With the luck of the Irish, the lone BCS catholic college football institutions, Boston College and Notre Dame, have extended their rivalry to 2019.

The new arrangement calls for six games to be played over nine seasons. The Eagles will play at South Bend in 2011, 2016, and 2018. The Irish will play The Eagles at home in 2012, 2015, and 2019.

Dating back to 1975, the teams have played each other 19 times. The Fighting Irish lead the series 10-9. The Eagles have evened the score in recent years by besting Notre Dame in seven of the past 9 games.

Boston College benefits greatly from these games as the TV exposure makes it more appetizing to college recruits along with the opportunity to play traditional powerhouse programs like Notre Dame.

BC Athlectic director Gene DeFilippo understands the importance of this series to his football program. “You want to be sure that you’re giving yourself a chance to recruit, and that your fans are going to be excited and your players are going to be excited to play those teams, which ours are. It just makes sense that BC and Notre Dame play.”

The teams next meet on  Oct 2nd in Chestnut Hill.
