One team last night saw its undefeated season and national championship hopes go up in smoke. Lucky for the Fighting Irish it was No. 1 Alabama who fell to Texas A &  M  29-24 and not Notre Dame (10-0), who handily beat Boston College (2-8) 21-6 Saturday night in Chestnut Hill to remain undefeated and squarely in the hunt for a spot in the BCS Championship Bowl game in Miami.

It’s very hard to win in college football Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly told a ABC reporter commenting on the inability of the Crimson Tide to remain unbeaten this season before kick off in Alumni Stadium.

This sentiment was not shared by his redshirt freshman starting QB Everet Golson who completed 16 of 24 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He hooked up with TE Troy Niklas and WR John Goodman, for 7- and 18-yard touchdown strikes respectively and rushed himself for 2-yard score. RB Theo Riddick rushed for 104 yards and grabbed six passes for 67 more yards. All-American TE Tyler Eiffert finished his second straight game with 60 yards receiving.

The Fighting Irish defense allowed only 53 yards rushing and no touchdowns to the home team Eagles. For the seventh time this season Notre Dame surrendered less than 14 points in a game. All–American LB Manti Te’o added a nation-leading sixth interception in the third quarter to bolster his Heisman resume and sure up a fourth straight Holy War win for his team.

The nation’s only other catholic FBS school, 2-8 Boston College Eagles, could  not get any momentum going against its blue and gold rivals. The Eagles could not stop a surging Notre Dame Offense from completing 10 straight third downs or engineering scoring drives of 90 and 87 yards in the first half. BC QB Chase Rettig finished a pedestrian 27 for 43 for 247 yards and one interception. Top Eagle receiver Alex Amidon caught six balls for 84 yards.

Notre Dame, this year’s Holy War victors and the 13-9 all-time series leader will take home the Frank Leahy Memorial and Ireland trophies back home to South Bend to prepare for their second straight ACC opponent the Wake Forest Demon Deacons next week as one of the only three remaining “unbeatens” in the country..
