US team lose to Sweden - Heather O’Reilly remains out of play
Squad now due to face Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinals
Heather O'Reilly was forced to sit out of the US team's World Cup match against Sweden in Germany due to groin injury. The squad unfortunately fell 2-1 in the final round of Group Play. They will now play Brazil in the quarterfinals of the competition.
The Associated Press reported that Lisa Dahlkvist converted a penalty and Nilla Fischer scored on a free kick. However their efforts were unsuccessful and Sweden beat the Americans for the first time in World Cup.
Unfortunately this is the fourth lost for the team since November 2010. The US was the No 1. women's team for more than two years prior to this.
O'Reilly who scored in the game against Columbia is expected to be well enough to play against Brazil.
Speaking to the Associated Press Lauren Cheney said "Obviously nobody wants to lose in a World Cup.
"We're still smiling, we're still enjoying this journey. Our belief in each other is unbelievable. No matter what happens, we believe we can make it and carry on. That's what we did. From the coaching staff on down, we all still have a lot of confidence."
