Summer Bird wins Belmont Stakes

Irish ancestry of Mine that Bird

Only Irish eyes who took a gamble on an outsider will be smiling tonight after the Belmont Stakes at the Belmont racetrack at Elmont in Long Island.

It was a bird that won the Belmont Stakes, Saturday, only not the one that everyone thought would emerge victorious, as Summer Bird and not Mine that Bird stormed home to victory.

The Eoin Harty-trained Mr. Hot Stuff ran a good race and was in contention coming down the straight, but the colt faded badly and jockey Edgar Prado seemed to pull the horse up at the end, coming home in eighth.

There was no fairytale ending for Mine that Bird, though it looked like Calvin Borel was leading the horse home first in the final lengths.  However, 11-1 outsider Summer Bird stormed through to win the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes, leaving the Kentuck Derby winner trailing in third.
