Shay Given has discussed an international comeback with Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni – but he is going to have to wait.

The Aston Villa ‘keeper spoke to Trap on the phone this week after ending his Ireland exile.

Given has told the Irish Sun that he acted in haste when he quit to concentrate on his club career last August.

Currently second choice ‘keeper at Villa, he informed Trapattoni that he is available if needed by his country.

But the Italian will not alter his plans to play Keiren Westwood in the February friendly against Poland.

Given has admitted to the paper that he may not add to his 125 international caps.

Donegal born Given said: “I have spoken to Giovanni and he knows that I am available if he needs me.

“He is going to stick with the new players against Poland in February and I understand that.”

The former Irish captain missed Villa’s defeat to Southampton yesterday with a hamstring injury and may move clubs before the transfer window closes.

He added: “I have to concentrate on my club career now but if I get the call from Ireland I will be available.”

The Irish national squad is in "deep sewage". The quals in March feature Austria at home (3-22) and at Sweden (3-26). They have played three matches of ten. That will give them the halfway mark. No way, they win at Sweden. They will most likely tie Austria at home. They need to start evaluating for down the road. 2014 is lost. The never say die loss to France in 2009 is now a distant memory. Changes need to be made now. Trap should be sacked. Given is a gallant distant memory. Time marches on. Robbie Boy is leading "Custer's Last Stand".
