Polish mayor thanks Irish for good UEFA camaraderie

Irish sports fans made a sound impression on Poland

It will be a love-in in Dublin this week when the lord mayor of Poznan in Poland flies in to meet President Michael D Higgins and Football Association of Ireland chiefs.

The meeting has been planned to allow the lord mayor to personally thank Irish football fans, also known as the Green Army, for their exceptional behaviour during Euro 2012.

According to the Journal, Ryszard Grobelny has called on Irish football fans to join him for a pint at O'Donoghue's famous public house in Dublin before he opens a new outdoor photo exhibition on Thursday documenting their friendly invasion of his city during Euro 2012.

Poznan is the fifth largest city in Poland.

'We were delighted with the Irish fans. The atmosphere was great and there was a feeling of something missing when the Irish left,' Poznan city spokesman Damean Zalewske told the Independent.

'All of us have great memories,' Zalewske said, adding that the mayor is particularly looking forward to reminiscing about the craic in the city's Old Square.

Mayor Grobelny will officially launch the 'Kings of the Craic' exhibition in Saint Stephen's Green this week. The exhibition will feature 20 billboard-style photographs which capture the highlights of the Green Army's stay in Poznan.

The event is sponsored by the Polish embassy in Ireland and the Office of Public Works.
