Philly Card Takes Shamrock Shape
DESPITE the loss of James Moore to a hand injury, promoter Tom Moran has moved quickly to fill the Irish gap on his October 4 fight night at the National Guard Armory in Philadelphia by adding Patrick and Paul Hyland to a card that already features middleweight Simon O'Donnell (6-1, 3 KOs).
O'Donnell, a Philadelphia-based Galway native, will take on Adrian Redmond (4-5-1) in the eight round co-main event. The 23-year-old hasn't fought since he beat Chris Overbey in March, and will be eager to perform well in front of his adopted hometown fans.
Though Redmond's record doesn't suggest a stellar career, four of his five losses came in his first four bouts, and he has only lost once in his last six. The 31-year-old North Carolina native's last fight was on August 8 when he beat Jean Michel in Atlanta.
The Hyland brothers, both Irish champions, will undoubtedly boost the Irish flavor of the night, something that Irish American Moran has made an integral part of this promotion.
"How do you replace James Moore? It was a kick in the gut, but the addition of the Hyland brothers shows we really made a commitment to the Irish in this show," Moran told the Irish Voice Tuesday.
"It could easily be the biggest Irish boxing show in ages, primarily because Philly, despite a large and vibrant Irish community, has not featured Irish boxers. We'd love for the New York area Irish to support this."
Featherweight Patrick (14-0, 7 KOs) will take on Feliciano Villa (7-2-1, 5 KOs) in a six round fight. The Tallaght, Co. Dublin native has fought in the U.S. before, beating Mike Dobbs in Boston on March 15 this year.
