In the second semifinal of the New York senior championship, Kerry used a brilliant shooting display by Robbie Moran to easily account for the challenge of Cavan. Moran actually equaled Cavan’s output with eight points and the side dominated the first half allowing only an Eoghan Carew score to easily take control. Nine different scorers with the strength of the bench as each sub made a contributing impact. It was eighteen minutes before Cavan had their first point at that juncture Kerry were just getting started. Shane Clifford had a brilliant save from Eric Bradley and the forwards replied with five unanswered scores before the break with defenders Paul Kelly and John Curran both on the mark showing the team work ethic of the side. Cavan did pull a goal back from a penalty midway through the second half and had a Mike Kennedy shot crash of the post amazingly staying out. It was their last hurrah however as the winners outscored clamped down defensively and they added three further points on the board for the easy nine point win.

Cork Leitrim 4-09 Cork 1-09

The difference in the first semifinal on Sunday was plain to be seen. Jamie Clarke was lethal in front of goal and his total of 3-05 over the hour was clinical. Ciaran McKeever was also on fire as the side withstood the sending off of Paddy Kelly two minutes before the interval. After an even opening start, Cork had their best period of the game when they had four unanswered points. A penalty with three minutes left in the half by Clarke after he was pulled down changed the game. After Kelly went to the line, the McKeever effect took over. He dominated the second half as Leitrim used quality ball inside to good effect. Cork were unable to build a good goal scoring chance in the second half, they worked the ball slowly allowing Leitrim to clog the back. In the Leitrim attacks the scores came. A goal in the early minutes followed two further goals inj the last quarter when they finally broke the game open. Cork did hit the net in the final moments when Jason Kelly hit the strings but it arrived in an inconsequential fashion.
