Ireland’s World Cup campaign got off to a successful start when they defeated Kazakhstan 2-1 away from home.
The Irish played badly against the world’s 142nd ranked footballing nation and it was only two late goals that saw them home.
Ireland struggled throughout after giving up a goal midway through the first half.
It was the introduction of Wolves striker Kevin Doyle that made the difference as he immediately troubled the home team with his surging runs.
Ireland’s first goal, a penalty, came after a Doyle cross led to Robbie Keane being fouled inside the penalty area. Keane converted the spot kick.
Then with just moment left Doyle volleyed home the winner for an undeserved victory that once again raises questions about manager Giovanni Trapattoni and his future as Irish coach after another negative, formless performance.

It is not good to know that the Irish "lucked out" against Kazakhstan. What will h appen against Germany down the road in October or so?
