FAI confirms talks over England/Ireland friendly at Aviva Stadium

The Football Association of Ireland has confirmed that it is in talks with the English FA with regards to the prospect of an international friendly match, at Aviva Stadium, between the Republic of Ireland and England.

Reports are now circulating that the two organizations are in talks about the game. It’s is thought that this game would plug a gap in the England fixture lists as they cancelled a scheduled game on June 8, in Thailand.

There has still been no official comment from the two associations. It has denied that it will be holding the game next June and Ireland also has no fixtures planned for that period.

Their statement read “In response to media speculation the Football Association of Ireland this evening (December 10) confirmed that it is in discussions with the English FA about a possible friendly match in Dublin however the June date reported in this morning’s newspapers is incorrect.

“The discussions are ongoing and it is expected that an announcement will be made within the next month.”

If the game does come to pass, this would be the first time since the 1995 game that the English team would have visited Ireland. The infamous match ended after just 27 minutes due to rioting.

Last time there was anything like that was back in 1973 when The Shamrock Rovers XI (made up of players from NI & ROI) took on Brazil and lost 4-3.
The FAI should forget about England and try to get a game against Spain.
I would be far more excited by the prospect of a friendly match between Ireland (ie.all 32 counties)and England-now that really would be something! Could that ever happen? Who knows? It could if the political will to bring it about was there, which sadly it isn't.
Thought that the FAI were gonna go stateside in May 2011 to play a couple of friendlies to try and recruit players with Irish roots based there??? Guess the FAI are feeling the financial pinch also and figure to stay home
