CIE 1-11

FDNY 0-6

CIE Dublin had a comprehensive win over the Fire Department of New York in the opening game on Sunday in an interesting match. In the first of two games that the CIE were involved in, they swept to a good victory to punctuate their trip to New York.

Barry Annette had the opening point for the FDNY. CIE quickly equalized with Dennis McCarthy supplying the score. CIE were doing all the pressing in the early stages, but New York were holding firm thanks to good work by full back Sean Fitzpatrick and corner back Jack Meaney.

Peter Kearns slipped CIE ahead with a good point from a tight angle. New York answered, though, with a majestic point from Dermot O'Sullivan.

CIE again pressed ahead by one when center forward Damien McCarthy fired over a point. Dennis McCarthy put CIE two ahead when he played a quick one-two with Damien McCarthy and fired over from 25 yards out.

CIE looked like they were going to go further ahead when full forward Steve Hackett worked his way clear, but his well struck shot was bravely parried away by keeper J.J. O'Sullivan.

Center forward McCarthy continued to be the playmaker for CIE, and he put them three ahead with a point and the FDNY were lucky that he didn't opt to go for goal as the chance was definitely on.

The superior fitness of CIE was beginning to tell, and center fielder Dave Byrne soloed in before firing over his side's sixth point of the match.

O'Sullivan with his second point of the game cut the deficit to three when he pointed a free from 40 yards out.

The final few minutes belonged to the visitors, however, as they added two more points to their tally as McCarthy and wing back Eamon Towey fired one over each. At the break CIE ahead by five, eight points to three.
