Cork's Derval O’Rourke has vowed to make the London Olympics and beat the back injury that forced her out of the national championships in Santry last Sunday.

O’Rourke caused a scare when she withdrew from the 100 meter hurdles after suffering a back spasm in her warm-up ahead of her attempt to win a 10th national title.

O’Rourke, who raced in England on Saturday, told reporters, “I’ve had a back problem for years. I have an issue with one of my vertebrae. I don’t see the point in going on about it because it is part of what you do in high-performance sport -- you deal with injuries.

 “When I warmed up I just wasn’t feeling great. I was actually moving pretty fast but was stiff in a few places. This made me a little worried especially as my Achilles and groin were both stuff.

“It was best not to race on Sunday. The plan is to take some anti-inflammatories, have a few ice baths and let everything settle. It’s no major drama. The plan is to race next Saturday.”
