Chicago loses out on 2016 Olympic bid in the first round
Chicago lost out in its bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games after the city was eliminated after the first round of voting.
Speculation had been rife that the decision was a tossup between the Windy City and Rio de Janeiro, but it was with some shock that Chicago was not selected to go into the second round of voting.
The U.S. delegation was gobsmacked when the IOC announced in Copenhagen that Chicago was out of the reckoning after the first vote.
While a Chicago win would have been somewhat of a shock, what was more shocking is that the city was eliminated so early, even after President Barack Obama flew to the Danish capital specifically to ask that the IOC consider his hometown for the Olympics.
Rio de Janeiro's bid was successful and it will become the first South American city to host the Olympic Games.
