British Open winner Darren Clarke is beloved, generous and a role model

Human scale hero for the rest of us

When Darren Clarke arrived back home this week he arrived a newly minted hero. But rather than grandstand he decided he'd rather spend time with his sons, Tyrone and Conor, only appearing for a press conference in Portrush, County Antrim when he checked in at home first.

Having raised his two sons after losing his beloved wife Heather to breast cancer, his real priorities have never been in any doubt.

At 42, with greying hair and a few love handles to spare, his victory on Sunday was a win for other men over 40 raising kids (and doing a decent job of it, thank you very much).

Now with help from former Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell, who runs a model agency and has two sons from her first marriage, home life is looking pretty sweet for the champion golfer.

They say you can know a man b y his actions, so when Clarkie stepped off his personal jet to buy drinks for all of the passengers on a nearby Easyjet flight to Belfast from Palma after the Iberdrola Open, he won admirers for life.

It's exactly the kind of gesture people expect from from Clarkie - the one of good humor and spontaneous generosity his parents nurtured in him that you can see in everything he does. Including winning.
