This name smacks of "The Quiet Man" for sure, I wonder how this Thornton might do in Hurling???

Indeed it was, cichaveg. The ice hockey player's name was, like many other Irish names, altered so that the non-Irish would be able to pronounce it. One of my daughter's is named Siobhan. You can imagine how this has been destroyed over the years in America. Another of our daughters is named Fiona. Until quite recently people here would ask, "Is that Greek?"

Wasn't John Wayne's name in "The Quiet Man" Sean Thornton?
