As he walked the rope line after his triumphant speech at the St. Patrick’s party at the White House on Tuesday night, President Obama seemed more animated than he had ever been at this event.
“Beat Romney,” someone shouted on the ropeline. Obama turned back with both thumbs up and said, “We will, we will.”
It was a combative moment from a president who is clearly in full re-election mode, and hoping the Irish can help him.
In his speech, the biggest applause line was when Obama accepted a certificate of Irish heritage and joked that he would hang it beside his birth certificate, which has been the focus of so much controversy for him.
Obama’s speech was far more political than in previous years, reflecting the upcoming election and the fact that it now seems certain Mitt Romney will be his GOP opponent.
Obama referenced all the Irish touchstones – President Kennedy and his visit to Ireland 50 years ago next year was high on his list and he cleverly worked in his own trip there in 2011.
Obama quoted Kennedy in his remarks. “’It is strange,’ President Kennedy said on his last day in Ireland, ‘that so many years and so many generations pass, and still some of us who come on this trip could feel ourselves among neighbors, even though we are separated by generations, by time and by thousands of miles.’
“I know most of you can relate to that. I think anyone who’s had a chance to visit can relate. And that’s why Jackie Kennedy later visited Ireland with her children and gave one of President Kennedy’s dog tags to his cousins in Dunganstown. And that’s why I felt so at home when I visited Moneygall.”
Comparing himself to Kennedy and putting himself clearly in the frame as a president with Irish roots was a very deliberate tactic by Obama on Tuesday night.

So too was the comparison to the successful struggle of Irish emigrants who made it in America, and the current hard times that they face.
In both cases, Obama chose to use the word “we” when speaking of those Irish and of present day events.
“But we choose to rise to these times for the same reason we rose to those tougher times -- because we are all proud peoples who share more than sprawling family trees,” Obama said.
“We are peoples who share an unshakeable faith, an unbending commitment to our fellow man, and a resilient and audacious hope. And that’s why I say of Ireland tonight what I said in Dublin last May, this little country that inspires the biggest things -- its best days are still ahead.”
Obama’s speech reflected the reality that his reelection campaign is taking nothing for granted, despite opinion polls showing him ahead of Romney.
The large crowd who attended the party in the East Room of the White House reflected that reality, too. It was significant that many of those present were not Irish, but rather were key supporters from important states around the country.
Every second person I met seemed to come from Ohio or Pennsylvania or Indiana, three of the key states Obama is hoping to win in November.
It is clear too that Obama is very much at peace with the Irish, that the ecstatic reception he got in Ireland last year has played a significant role in his attitudes towards the Irish.
Obama’s Irish cousin Henry Healy described a unique situation on Tuesday as he and fellow Moneygall man Ollie Hayes were being ushered into the White House for the reception.
Coincidentally, Obama emerged from a meeting and spotted the two men. He called over for them to join him, and ushered them into a nearby room where they spoke for 10 minutes about his hopes to visit Moneygall again, and Ireland generally.
There is no question that this president has decided that what looked like the tenuous badge of Irishness that was foisted on him some years ago is something he can actually benefit from.
But there is also, it seems, a place in his heart for the Irish. Looking at First Lady Michelle Obama, dressed in a lovely green dress and clearly enjoying the company of Irish Prime Minister Enda
Kenny and his wife Fionnuala, and watching the president stand far longer on the rope line than previous years, it is clear he is at ease.
There is no guarantee next March that there will be another four years of Obama. But clearly, he believes that having the Irish on his side in November can work well for him too.
As he said in his closing remarks to the guests, “As long as I am president, you will have a strong friend, a steadfast ally, and a faithful partner...”.
The loud ovation he received showed there are many Irish who wish for nothing less than that either.
Here's the White House's footage from the day:

I note that the President specificaly states that they plant the shamrock rather than having it destroyed by the on security grounds. I still think they should roll it up into joints and hae a good blast. Like Pres. Clinton before him, he could then claim to have smoked but not inhaled.
IrelandNorth | Mar 24, 2012, 03:44 PM EDT
I understand the logic it's the political realities that worry me. As long as governments are moral then you have little to fear, what happens when everyone is on these programs and the government entity wishes to change the rules. In a free society where the individual chooses their own products they have more control and ultimately more protection. Social security started as a safety net, a supplement for the elderly in their last few years of life. Where is it today, My parents got theirs back, I'll see little, my children will get to pay and get nothing. You hate insurance companies because they are big and unfeeling, Governments are bigger with more layers of red tape, don't pay your insurance and they cancel service, don't pay the government you end up in prison.
McNamara31 | Mar 24, 2012, 11:47 AM EDT
Searlit.... A belated "Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig" to you and yours. Its sad how some continue to stay in their echo chamber while so many have no healthcare or even worse after a lifetime of work lose it when they become sick. Then you have the Ryan plan which is a total joke and just delivers more old and fragile people to the will of the insurance industry.
McNamara31 | Mar 24, 2012, 11:38 AM EDT
BrianO....All industrialized nations, with the exception of the United States, implement some form of universal health care. Even Pope Benedict XVI called on world governments, at his international papal conference at the Vatican, to insure universal access to health care, which he described as an "inalienable right”. If it weren’t for the overt power and control of the insurance and financial lobbies in America all Americans would have had “universal Healthcare” decades ago.
Searlit | Mar 24, 2012, 11:29 AM EDT
You said it so well McNamara31!The trolls are made of clay with nothing to back up their depserately fabricated lies.
BrianO | Mar 24, 2012, 01:28 AM EDT
Can you imagine an 80 year old buying insurance? yes. I can also imagine a government controlled health care scheme denying an 80 year old any care, some bureaucrat will make the correct cold decision, by the numbers, go ahead trust the state. But remember you will be getting old too.
McNamara31 | Mar 23, 2012, 01:26 PM EDT
emal7717 states: (Obama) "hes a bloody god hating antichristian muslim".... and you are a "bearing false witness" Christian who loses all credibility when you post such trash. I would take another look at the existing GOP platform and see what they want to do with continued deregulation Wall St, revisions to Medicare and social programs which protect the elderly and tell me again that they're looking out for the middle class. They are looking out for the "very" wealthy and corporate interests as always. How about that voucher program they want to push on seniors that gives them apx $6000. to cover their medical costs in old age. Can you imagine an 80 year old cancer stricken retiree going from insurance co. to insurance co. trying to buy insurance with their GOP (Ryan Plan) sponsored voucher. That's the vision the GOP has for the middle class. So keep getting distracted by the Muslims type smears the GOP machine sends out all the while they’re stealing the future security of America’s middle class.
emal7717 | Mar 23, 2012, 12:46 PM EDT
JFK was what today we would call a Libertarian. The one in the white house is the lowest of low when it comes to politics. In 2008 he said and I quote "If I put an apostrophe in my name does that make me Irish?" At that point he lost any respect that he may have had with me or my family. 1. He's not catholic and has done everything to hurt / injure / destroy the Catholic Church just like the Orangeman he is - but wait, hes not an orangeman, hes a bloody god hating antichristian muslim. 2. He is about as Irish as my brit ex-wife (bishop granted me an annulment thank god as she was one of those methodists who support lesbien priests). and 3. He didnt come to the continental US until he was in University. McNamara31 your full of it! the GOP isnt trying to destroy the middle class...its actually made up of you and me! regular people and just as the DNC has been co-opted so has the GOP. In reality there is little difference between rank and file Dems and Reps like us, its the politicians that need us at each others throats so that they cna remain in office giving big money to thier friends. Lets look at some simple issues...we can agree that welfare should not be for life, nor should it be gov. induced slavery...Regan created welfare to work that was embraced by both sides, 2 years of the dole, but durring that time you go to school and learn a trade (Anything wrong with that?) The gop is not "To hell with you" just more realistic by saying that we want a person to rise up and not be a slave for some politicianns political agenda! We are willing to help all we can to those who wish to get out of the welfare cycle! but with Socialist Democrat politicians who view that the only way to remain in power is to enslave the poor! this is a sick situation...
McNamara31 | Mar 23, 2012, 11:47 AM EDT
Fran Connor.. You just made JFK and the entire family turn in their graves. JFK and his ancestors would never consider themselves "Republican" style politicians of today. Today's GOP has a mentality that would have disgusted true Irishmen of his generation because true Irishmen had a belief in social justice for all. Your statement couldn't be further from the truth. The GOP/Conservative mindset of today is much aligned to that of the Nativist view that JFK's grandparents would encounter and they (Nativists) were hated by the Irish immigrants and their future generation. The first Irish immigrants built churches, schools and "yes" hospitals to provide healthcare for the poor. The first great Irish millionaires like John William Mackay in Virginia City treated his employees extremely well gave out 9 million in charity during his lifetime and created a pension style system for the elderly who had worked in the mines. Our Irish ancestors were in no way the "I've got mine" the hell with you, type of GOP politician destroying the middle class today. It’s a dishonor to their memory to say so.
Fran Connor | Mar 23, 2012, 09:43 AM EDT
Wasn't it JFK who said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"? He'd be a republican of libertarian today. This community organizer never worked a day in his life (until his present job), and he's still trying to vote "present" to this day. What an empty suit.

Hey hollabackgurl what does meanolgrouch mean by teabagger, seems like a slur about someones personal tendencies, but I guess hate speech is ok if aimed at dissenters. The ends justify the means right.
hollabackgurl | Mar 22, 2012, 10:13 PM EDT
As a member of the GOP perhaps you could write to your party leader irishpjk and ask them to stop bringing their small government into people's bedrooms, sex lives and marriage agencies.

yellow dog democrat-meaning you would vote for a democrat even if he were a yellow dog, very enlightened, shows a very open minded and tolerant perspective.

Thank you for your response MegK311. BrianO I respect anybodies right to have contrary opinion I did accuse any posters of been narrow minded because of their views ,that appears to be your modus operandi not mine.Poor Lizflady Obama is a black irishman you obviously have a problem with his "blackness"
irishpjk | Mar 22, 2012, 06:59 PM EDT
As a member of the GOP I don’t care about you or your bedroom, and that’s why I don’t want to pay for your contraceptives. It did cross my mind that it might be worth it if I could be sure you would never reproduce.
LizFlady | Mar 22, 2012, 06:16 PM EDT
Obama knows exactkt when to claim he's all black and again he knows exactly when to claim he's irish. Obama is nothing but a liar and a sham.

Obama an Irishman?! Get real. You can have him. He's not even an American! Take him to Ireland--and keep hm there--PLEASE!

I'm adopting a notification system for when I'm through with a thread, so if anyone wants to follow along and keep throwing their own waste chimp-style, they won't have to use up their last brain cell hunting for me, or thinking they've run me off. There's always new threads, children. See you in the funny papers.
joan1954 | Mar 22, 2012, 05:22 PM EDT
Obama is no JFK, doesn't have his finesse nor his loyalty to this country.
Meanolgrouch | Mar 22, 2012, 03:32 PM EDT
Since I don't want to spend all day rebutting the endless rightwing teabagger lies of some previous posters, let me offer up the most heartfelt appreciation to President Barack H u s s e i n Obama, the best this country's ever seen. Our opposition knows just as we do that he's always going to be the smartest one in the room, and that cool long range strategies are needed today, not blowhard bluster. They wouldn't be so terrified of a supposedly incompetent crook, do you think? Hell no. As I've said before, even the GOP ain't that dumb. But then spiritual darkness hates the light. Hooray for our rainbow president! God continue to guide and protect him for the great work to which he's been called.
Meanolgrouch | Mar 22, 2012, 03:16 PM EDT
It would take days to rebut all the fallacies written below, so I must be selective. Let me start with klbutler's claim that Democrats were against civil rights and the GOP freed the slaves. You see, as he's been taught to do, he's twisting the truth; telling it kinda sorta but still with a huge hidden lie. In the 1860's Lincoln did indeed free the slaves. Although that's not what our Civil War was about; it was fought over states' rights. Back in the 1860's the Democratic party was the conservative one, the GOP progressive. By the time of LBJ's voting rights legislation, the party positions had completely switched. He signed the voting rights legislation full well knowing that the American South would desert the Democratic Party immediately to more congenial waters with the GOP. Now the GOP 1% uber rich overlords are having a heart attack over that darkie in THEIR White House. Truth is, were Lincoln alive today, he'd be a yellow dog Democrat like myself. So while klbutler technically told the truth of a sorts, he lied by ignorance and/or hidden lie. Didn't expect to be outted on that by an avid historian, did you, child?
McNamara31 | Mar 22, 2012, 10:53 AM EDT
Niall.... you have a problem with the blogger software AGAIN the post appearing at 9:34 is not from me. IC really needs to get this fixed.
McNamara31 | Mar 22, 2012, 10:50 AM EDT
klbutler "why don't you get your facts straight before running your mouth" you say to a fellow poster; then go on to post nothing more than smear and mere delusions without a bit of fact. Sorry to tell you klbutler you'll have to get ready for 4 more years because the majority of Americans are not going to vote for the other "cracker" party and their dinosaur vision for the future.
McNamara31 | Mar 22, 2012, 09:34 AM EDT
Dear holla, think before you drink the kool aid, the contraceptive issue was introduced by george stephanopolis in a primary debate, the purpose to give a false narative to attack with, like you have done. Traditional marriage is being attacked daily, the statists hate tradition and individualism, the use this issue to divide and conquer, they could care less about you as long as their goals are met.Once the traditions are destroyed they will attack you too.
hollabackgurl | Mar 22, 2012, 09:23 AM EDT
The GOP want to bring their small government into your bedroom to stop you from using contraception or any form of family planning, and they even want to tell you who you can and can not marry.
BrianO | Mar 22, 2012, 02:21 AM EDT
don't underestimate Obama, he will say and do anything to anybody so that his statist overthrow can be completed. Life is hard and it is easy to believe that the government is the answer. In the end we the people are the answer, each one of us striving to be better and helping each other out. My liberal friends, don't give up your rights to a government entity, they are very hard to get back, many people paid the ultimate sacrifice to give all of us the rights we have become so use to. Once the government controls the power over your health they control the power of who lives and who doesn't. I don't know about you, but I would prefer that decision to be mine or my close families. Take control of your life before someone else does
irishpjk | Mar 21, 2012, 10:48 PM EDT
It amazes me how the incompetent in the white house today can identify with the incompetent that was there fifty years ago and the Irish swallow it. Russia saw Kennedy as a weak president when he hung the Cuban freedom fighters out to dry at the Bay of Pigs, so they tested him and we had a missile crisis that was as close to a nuclear war as we ever came. The Berlin crisis was another test and they built the wall, had we done anything about the wall the East German army had orders to back off, then President Regan came along and said tear down that wall and they said thank God at last, and down it came. Now we have an incompetent running around apologizing to the world because we sent the cream of our youth all over the world to save people’s lives from tyrants as well as natural disasters.
MegK311 | Mar 21, 2012, 10:23 PM EDT
Seanomelb, Actually I am not totally impressed with the present candidates for President. The problem is that top quality candidates choose not to run because they and their families would be ripped to shreds. going through the process. Which by the way goes on too long. Obama has been on the campaign trail forever. However any of the Republican candidastes would be better than Obama.
borefield | Mar 21, 2012, 09:09 PM EDT
Pillb04 surely will have his pills in the bottle paid for if Barack is reelected and by all the hard working people who do not endorse entitlements. When will the Irish and those of Irish decent wake up and realize he doesn't give a rats posterior for the Irish race or for the heritage they invented for him, just wants their votes.

I am proud to be an American but an American with distinctive Irish roots, James Earl Of Ormonde was my ancester, but to read some comments from those in Ireland "put' down those of us(Americans)is sad.. hope all Irishmen do not feel the way some have expressed their opinions here...most Americans with Irish descents are proud and still have many of the old Irish ways passed down from generations in our homes.
klbutler | Mar 21, 2012, 08:22 PM EDT
@pilib04...why don't you get your facts straight before running your mouth..Obama is out..no more 4 years...he even agreed that he woud not deserve 4 years if he didn't get the job done in 3..he has amde a bad situation worse...so he needs to go..ANYONE WOULD BE BETTER! FEIDIR LINN !
klbutler | Mar 21, 2012, 08:16 PM EDT
Obama is nothing more than a puppet, and he will stoop to anything to get re elected..he has shown moments of 'racism" toward white people and if you think for one moment he is proud of his Irish ancestry, your crazy...I would not doubt that he is not Irish at all since a lot about Obama has been and is questionable...If you do not live in America, then you have no clue to who Obama really is..the Obama media is very competent in "painting' a Dorian Grey portrait of Obama..as for JFK..he said,"Ask NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU,BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY." Obama is totally opposite of JFK... He wants the citizens to be totally dependent on the country...and there was a comment made about the democrats were for civil rights and repubs were not, that in not true..but that is partisan politics..in fact there were MANY DEMOCRATS THAT WERE AGAINST THE CIVIL RIGHTS AND THE repubs freed the slaves...and yet history is being distorted and revised to suit the democrats...

O.K seano, to think differently than you is to be narrowed minded, to not agree with you then you are some dim witted gnome, Since I am incompetent of original thought, could you supply what a good president should be? Remember the president takes a vow to uphold the constitution.
RedBranch | Mar 21, 2012, 06:25 PM EDT
Surely Michelle Obama should have received one of the coveted Irish Heritage Certificates. Strangely you don't hear much about her Irish ancestry, which is as close as her husband's. Anyone want to comment as to why this might be the case??
seanomelb | Mar 21, 2012, 05:59 PM EDT
skibberean (what ever that is) is a sad type, typical of the right wing narrow minded gnomes who post here. I wonder if Meg311 could supply us with her criteria as to what makes a good president or whom she thinks would do a great job.four more years.

Dear pi lib 04, Remember JFK "a rising tide lifts all ships" refering to having the people(as in We the People) keep more of their earned income and determine where they would spend it. I have no problem where you choose to spend your money, I'm sure you are giving all your disposable income to help your causes. It is when a person is forced to give that there is a problem. How would you feel about being forced to give money to the GOP, you know to be fair. I'll give to my causes and you give to yours. The Constitution provides quite clearly what we are required to give to the country in order to provide for the common defense. Freedom requires you make decisions for yourself, you will make mistakes but in the end you will be the best judge for what is good for yourself.

First of all to the person who says anyone who dislikes Obama is a bigot.....it's Chappaquiddick and if she/he were to do some research on the Kennedy/Fitzgerald folk, he/she would find some way to justify their actions. Obama is an empty suit who uses whatever he can to get votes. He never had a job and makes out like he's from "the hood". Having grown up in public housing I am "more black" than he is.

Murph46, I think you might not really understand who JFK was. Perhaps a reminder. He drafted our first national healthcare. Oh, by the by, for those haters invoking President Kennedy's name, remember you nutjob Santorum had no use for JFK or his speech about keeping religion OUT of the White House. Santorum said JFK's speech in Houston made him "want to throw up!"
pilib04 | Mar 21, 2012, 04:41 PM EDT
Like JFK, President Obama has given us National Healthcare. President Kennedy tried to get partial healthcare for just the elderly and was beaten back by the Republicans. It too his death and a victorious LBJ to pass Medicare. It also took the defeat of the Republicans to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Thank you President Obama for making Healthcare for all Americans your top priority.
pilib04 | Mar 21, 2012, 04:36 PM EDT
It is great to have a President of Irish descent. President Obama is genuinely proud of his Irish roots. I was a bit surprised that Niall made the party. It sounded like Niall had been shut-out by the tone of his last article. But it's all good. And now for the haters on this blog: I can't believe that you are posting such insults to our Irish President. You should all be ashamed. My guess is you would all feel quite comfortable as members of the Drumcree Orange Order. You are as racist and despicable as your brothers in the OO-KKK.
bunkerisland | Mar 21, 2012, 04:10 PM EDT
Seems like many will blame the President for their immediate problems rather than converse with their Congressman to encourage them to work cooperatively for all of us. Others seem to say "drill baby drill" and ignore the harm to human health and other natural resources. If there is a problem it must be the President's fault. Obama thinks Ireland is part of England? Wake up please.
McNamara31 | Mar 21, 2012, 04:02 PM EDT
Skibberrean...."I hope that God's Grace"... How can you call on God's grace when you call another human being a "thing that crawled out from under a rock and slithered into the Presidency."The level of vitriol in the states is disgusting, detrimental, and divisive.

O'Bama will be remembered as a Great President who saved our Nation from another Great Depression! Look at the mess he inherited from the idiot Bush! It is a good thing that he claims Irish Roots, he certainly has the "gift" of Blarney. Give Old Teddy a break, he tried to repent. Spent 50 years trying to help the poor and less fortunate to make amends for past transgressions. He is answering to God now!

McNamara31 | Mar 21, 2012, 02:40 PM EDT
I find the comments totally laughable that tell the Irish people what to think; like they are some naïve little backward nation. On the other hand some of the Americans who post here would do well to travel a bit and finally see we are a global society with all the advantages and problems that that will bring. Obama for whatever you may think of him is a forward thinker and has recently connected and enjoys his Irish roots as any yank would when they have made an ancestral connection. The real threat is not the use of Obama’s “Irishness” it’s the isolationist mentality in some parts of America to “take the country back” to some time that doesn’t exist anymore and which could not succeed economically. If the choices in November are Romney/Santorum or Obama; Its Obama hands down because Obama lives in the future and the others are a product of the past. “Is Feidir Linn” one more time.

One thing I am happy about is that the people living in Ireland wont be voting next November. Obama is trying to use the Irish to help get himself re elected. He is nuts if he thinks I will vote for him because he is playing the Irish card. I don't like people trying to use me. Obama thinks being President is one big party and the tax payers will foot the bill. I am not impressed because there are too many people out of work, too many businesses closed down and too many people have lost their homes. I for one am worse off than I was 4 years ago. I also don't like being accused of being racist when I don't agree with Obama's policies. I don't care what race/color the President is. I want someone who is a good leader. Being a community organizer does not qualify one to be President of the US.

Dear bythebay, maybe you can change my view of the president, is his presidency the most transparent? Has he used his ethnicity to unite or divide? Has he used good judgement on energy management? Do his comments change depending on the audience he speaks to. Should we get use to unemployment at 9%? Should we be ready for the epa to make coal and electricity to expensive to use? Is America a shining light of freedom or has she seen her better days. I'm supposed to get use to it and be quiet. You live here too, when the freedoms are eroded and the utopia doesn't happen, and you too are told to be quiet or be jailed it will be too late.

If he is invoking JFK,then cut taxes like JFK did to spur the economy!

Niall, lips tightly pressed against his one true love's posterior, is providing nothing more than a free campaign ad for Odumbo. The racist clown in the White House is the most divisive occupant ever, not a uniter, 'president' of those he uses and exploits, but not all of the American people. Watch your back if he is your 'friend,' - when the time is right, he'll plunge a knife into you, too.

Dear celtic queen sorry for sounding bigoted "just a typical white person" using obama's words here.
CelticQueenUSA | Mar 21, 2012, 10:58 AM EDT
The hate coming from all you bigots makes me sick. This is a fine man who has no characteristics of Ted Kennedy and plenty of good on his own. Kennedy was a drunken mess as proved by Chapaquitic!

He is still the thing that crawled out from under a rock and slithered into the Presidency. He is a fraud, a liar, and a Marxist. I hope that God's Grace will protedt these United States from this evil thing disguised as a man in a suit! DITTO, BrianO and colkelley

Obama's as Irish Henry the VIII. Obama is no Jack Kennedy, Ted Kennedy maybe. And as for his roots, best to look to the African Continent than the Emerald Isle. His Da' was a Muslim from Kenya and we don't know a whole lot about the 'lighter' side of the family because President 'transparent' refuses to give any details about that part of his life. I love the Irish and I love being Irish, I just wish they weren't so damned naive.

Just how gullible ARE you people? The Conman in Chief has you morons wrapped around his crooked little finger. If you vote for him BECAUSE he is half-Black then you are a racist. If you do not vote for him because he is an incompetent crook then you are not a racist, you are informed.

I am proud he expressed the intellectual and heartfelt connection between Douglas and O'Connell.Brillant leader!

Ok...so I am wondering what the President has done for the Irish? Has he helped in the unification, giving Ireland back to the Irish, used his power to have the English let go? There are many in the states with Irish Ancestry. So what? What have you done for them? Why should they support him? Having the English PM there only serves to show Obama isn't interested in resolving things. What a great thing it would have been to have both the Heads of both Islands there to speak and align with Obama. But It hink Obabma considers Ireland to be part of England... sad.

@BrianO, well that's what most politicians do. They use whoever and whatever advantage they can to gain and to hold onto power. Nothing new about that. Sort of the "name of the game" that's been played by Dems. & Reps. since Day One. Is Obama genuinely interested in his Irish roots? I don't know. Is he using it to his advantage? Probably. I really don't care. For me, it's not the deciding factor in whether I think he's taking the U.S. in the right direction or not.

Lucky we will continue to be when he is reelected!
judiron | Mar 21, 2012, 09:41 AM EDT
I think he's a joke and I'm surprised you print this garbage. Do not patrinize him it is an insult to all that are really Irish.

This is America. If Obama, or any POTUS, wants to celebrate Ireland and his Irish ancestral line, go for it. I never have and never will, vote for someone on the basis of whether or not a candidate has Irish ancestry. It's their political platform that matters to me, not how many Irish ancestors they can claim. I'm in favor of any POTUS, Dem. or Rep., fostering good relations between the U.S. and Ireland.

I usually like to make some humorous comment about the president, but when I read the tone of this article, I want to scream warnings to the Irish people and politicians. Obama is a committed statist. He uses whatever and whoever he can to posses more power, the ends justify the means. Beware, he likes the Irish connection because he can use it as a wedge against his detractors and knows that Ireland posses no threat to his power if he renegs on any promises
