Background: A Notre Dame student, Matt Keough lives in Rye, New York. He is currently completing an internship with Irish Central and the Irish Voice.
Tell us about your Irish heritage.
“Each one of my grandparents is Irish. I have a little German and Austrian blood but have always identified myself as an Irish American. As far as specifics, I know my great great great grandfather, Michael Keough, left Co. Wexford for the U.S. in the 1840s.”
What are you studying at Notre Dame?
“My intended major is film, theater and television, but I’m also looking into options in anthropology.”
Who is your favorite movie director?
“I think he only directed Sour Grapes which wasn't a hit of any sort, but Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm, is definitely my favorite and biggest influence. His ability to depict certain things that everyone knows but doesn't acknowledge is hilarious and unmatched.
I was very happy to see Quentin Tarantino win an Oscar for his film Django Unchained. I have always loved Martin Scorsese films.”
What is your favorite thing about attending Notre Dame?
“For me it’s the people. I’ve never before met so many people willing to go out of their way to help others. The Notre Dame Family is a very real thing and students feel a part of something.”
What is your first memory of taking a trip to Ireland?
“I remember looking in awe at a castle and thinking the U.S. should have these things. Another great memory was fishing at Ashford Castle, then walking to get ice cream in Cong, Co. Mayo. I also have a picture of myself on my dad’s shoulders using his ears as handlebars from my first birthday in Co. Limerick.”
What has surprised you most about working with Irish Central and the Irish Voice?
“To be honest, the shock came when I realized I would be writing articles. At first I was expecting a more coffee-getting type internship. The first day I was told my boss likes to throw people in the deep end and see what happens. For now, I’ve stayed afloat.”
Who is your favorite sports personality?
“Eli Manning. I love the Giants and Eli is a proven winner. He’s never said a bad thing about anyone. As far as personality, I don’t think it would be possible to have a better one than Shaq. He seems like a very real person who doesn't take himself too seriously but is able to be the center of attention.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“In a dream world I would direct or write for some sort of television show. I see myself pursuing a career in that type of work. If not, I’m sure I’ll be doing something with writing. “
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
“I guess some would be surprised to know my favorite band is the Grateful Dead, but others wouldn’t!”
