Skeletal remains, believed to be human, were discovered yesterday at a construction site near Trinity College Dublin.

Workers had commenced digging on College Street in Dublin’s city center as part of the work to connect the two lines of the Luas light rail.

Site work was immediately halted following the discovery, and archaeological experts were brought in to complete the unearthing.

Gráinne Mackin, Director of Communications for the Luas cross-city project, told the Irish Times that the remains were found about five feet down a trench.

“Just by appearance the remains look to be historic – we could be talking medieval times,” she said.

Archaeological assessment of the site could take a number of days. “The work has to be done carefully and sensitively,” Mackin said.
