The greek island of Skorpios which held the wedding of Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis is said to have been sold to a Russian billionaire by the only surviving heir of the shipping magnate, Athina Onassis Roussel.
The Island, bought by Aristotle Onassis in 1962 for 3.5 million drachma and rumored to have attracted interest from Giorgio Armani, Bill Gates and Madonna, may now sell for the equivalent of $131 million. It was host to many parties during Aristotle’s residency and holds three houses, a helicopter landing pad and a boat quay. Six years after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, the island hosted the marriage of Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis and is also the resting place of the shipping tycoon, his daughter Christine, and son, Alexander, who died in a plane crash in 1973.
Skorpios passed to Athina when her mother, Christina, died of a heart attack in 1988. However, the heiress reportedly has no great interest in the island and lives in Sao Paolo with her husband, Brazilian Olympic show jumper, Alvaro de Miranda Neto.
Greek media say that the name of the Russian businessman who is to buy the island has not been revealed yet but that contracts for the purchase of the private island are being drawn up by law firms in Athens and Geneva.
Company owner of Vladi Private Islands, Farhad Vladi, has said that although he has not heard of the deal, it is possible that Ms Onassis Roussel has decided to sell the island. Vladi was asked to carry out an evaluation of the island eight years ago and told the Daily Mail: “These Russian oligarchs have billions, so it may be that one of them came along and said ‘I will give you 100 million or 200 million euros for it’. Anything is possible.”
