Very interesting, My Smith family is from Midleton, County Cork where we have found they were they raised sheep and horses. Maybe they started as blacksmiths. As far as I've been able to trace Mary Cashman a Catholic married Jonas Smith COI and problems began when Jonas died in 1847. Other names are Denish Donovan and Johannah Reardon some family members did change the name back to O'Riordan also of Co Cork. The other side of the family are McLane, McCann, McAndrew,Carey, Deane and Tucker of Co. Mayo
"Finally there are the names derived from the other peoples who were introduced into Ireland at various times. Most numerous of these, of course, are English names introduced during various plantations and otherwise. There are mainly found in the North of Ireland, which was the most extensively planted, but are also found everywhere." My Irish Surname is Wilson which is the 23rd most common name in Ireland. We also have Regan, O'Laughlin, O'Henrick, and Reid.
I'm an Irish Smith my family is from Co. Kilkenny I believe it's 5th most common name in Ireland. My other Irish family names are Thompson, Fitzpatrick, Fitzgerald and Kennnedy.
this may help with tracing My Grandmother with the name Smith. The is very interesting` Thank You Kath Nugent Daughter of Lawrence Nugent Teressa Nugent Roscommon 1916
