The O'Neill clan

Hugh Dubh (Black Hugh) O'Neill's small army of Ulstermen inflected severe casualties in Cromwell's much larges force at Clonmel, where the invaders lost 1,500 to 2,000 men. Hugh Dubh evacuated the town withoutn Cromwell's knowledge and headed for Limerick. In June, 1651, a Cromwellian force 2 to 3 times larger that Hugh Dubh's and led by Ireton, attacked Limerick, but the 1,500 Ulstermen held the city for about 4½ months before Hugh Dubh finally was forced to surrender. Hugh was a nephew of Eoin Rua and a grandnephew of Hugh, Earl of Tyrone, who lost at Kinsal. O'Neill is said to be one of the olders surnames in Europe.

We trace back to the "Ui Neill".My Dad's mother was Luetta O'Neill and would never change O'Neill as some of her family changed to O'Neal here in East Tennessee. She named my dad "Rory", but when got birth certificate back they had spelled it "Roy". I guess they thought that she had spelled it wrong in Georgia where he was born. She still called him Rory. I have a great grandfather, James Jackson O"Neill who married Jane Sellers O"Neill born 1858. Buried, Union Springs,Alabama.I don't know much beyond that. Some relatives have the name O'Neal as a middle name??

To ya ! Sroneil through the years and hard times the O'Neill name has been spelled by differnt people all over the world . An at times it has been spelled how people heard it spoke to them an you don't hear two ells you wont spell two ells , An a lot of them that were checking you in to the states at the right old time could care less abought spelling a Pattys name right . How come no reference to Shane O'Neill, King of Ulster? My Family The McShanes from County Armagh trace their ancestry to Shane O'Neill, Mc meaning son of Shane.
