Hugh Dubh (Black Hugh) O'Neill's small army of Ulstermen inflected severe casualties in Cromwell's much larges force at Clonmel, where the invaders lost 1,500 to 2,000 men. Hugh Dubh evacuated the town withoutn Cromwell's knowledge and headed for Limerick. In June, 1651, a Cromwellian force 2 to 3 times larger that Hugh Dubh's and led by Ireton, attacked Limerick, but the 1,500 Ulstermen held the city for about 4½ months before Hugh Dubh finally was forced to surrender. Hugh was a nephew of Eoin Rua and a grandnephew of Hugh, Earl of Tyrone, who lost at Kinsal. O'Neill is said to be one of the olders surnames in Europe.
Roy(deceased)He was an Irish tenor and just as I, He would have enjoyed this written history. Thanks, for all the information. I'm like a sponge, asorbing any Irish History. We trace back to the "Ui Neill".My Dad's mother was Luetta O'Neill and would never change O'Neill as some of her family changed to O'Neal here in East Tennessee. She named my dad "Rory", but when got birth certificate back they had spelled it "Roy". I guess they thought that she had spelled it wrong in Georgia where he was born. She still called him Rory. We have traced and read everything we find on O'Neill. Thanks, Liam, well done!! Dorothy Cain

I'd like to recommend that any O'Neills join the www.oneillclans.com web site and that they think about joining the O'Neill DNA project (info on the site). Yes, McShane's are descended from Shane O'Neill. An O'Neill clan gathering was held in Paris. I've written an article on the clan meeting and it will be published beginning october. I'd like to publish on the Irish central site and i ask Liam Moriarity to contact me if he is interested. kathleen O'Neill Benshila oneillbenshila@gmail.com
How come no reference to Shane O'Neill, King of Ulster? My Family The McShanes from County Armagh trace their ancestry to Shane O'Neill, Mc meaning son of Shane.
Where does O'Neil with one "L" come from then. I was told our family came from Kerry. What is the difference between two and one "L".
